Super Bowl Prediction

We’re finally down to the last week of football until August. Although it’s a bittersweet moment every year, it looks like we will have a good Super Bowl matchup tonight between the AFC champion Denver Broncos and NFC champion Carolina Panthers. These teams are very different, especially offensively. The Broncos are led by quarterback Peyton Manning, who has lost some of his ability due to multiple neck surgeries and wear down from his long time in the league, and there are rumors that this could be his last game ever. On the other side, Cam Newton looks to be in his prime, and the Panthers have really exceeding expectations this season. All we can hope for is a good game. Here are our picks:

Denver Broncos vs Carolina Panthers (6:30 PM):

DAVID: Well the big game is finally here! This game should be a great game to watch, pitting two great defenses against each other, paired with exciting offenses. The Denver Broncos have the number one defense in the league, with the Panthers defense very close behind. The Carolina Panthers offense is super explosive, led by quarterback Cam Newton. The Denver Broncos offense has some strengths of their own, and are led by veteran quarterback Peyton Manning. Two weeks ago against the Patriots, the Denver defense terrorized Tom Brady, getting pressure on practically every play. The Broncos will look to do the same thing on Sunday, but may not have as much success against the Panthers who have a better running game, a better offensive line, and a quarterback who can avoid pressure. Two weeks ago against the Cardinals, the Panthers offense torched the Arizona secondary, but will have more trouble against Denver’s acclaimed secondary. What this game will come down to is which offense can get the better of which defense. I believe that Cam Newton and the Panthers will be too difficult for the Broncos to stop, whereas the Panthers will have an easier time shutting down Manning and the Denver offense. That’s why I’m going with the PANTHERS 27-21.

MIKE: Though the Carolina defense is one of the league’s best, the Broncos top the list of best defenses in the NFL, and it was easy to see why last week. They put pressure on Tom Brady and completely threw him off his game. Though Cam Newton is more mobile, I still think the Denver defense will have a good day, similar to last week. On the other side of the ball, the Carolina offense is the better half. They seem unstoppable with a dual-threat QB and a good running game. The Denver offense has struggled at times, but looked pretty good last week. I don’t think the Broncos will be great on offense, but I think they will do enough to get the job done. I also think that the Denver secondary will do a good job of shutting down Carolina’s unspectacular receiving corps. Therefore, the game will come down to whether the Broncos can stop Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart in the rushing game and tight end Greg Olsen from getting big plays. I think they will. BRONCOS 24-23.
