Peddie Basketball Dominates the PSIT

Peddie Basketball swept its opponents during the Peddie School Invitational Tournament (PSIT) on December 9-11. The team beat Solebury School (88-57) on Friday, Gilman School (83-65) on Saturday, and Lawrenceville Academy (81-60) on Sunday.

The team prepared for the tournament with intensive practices two hours each day.  Players have worked hard on and off the courts since the start of Thanksgiving Break.

During the tournament, the team worked to win by over 20 points in each game. Part of its success was due to the comradery of the players and the support of the crowd.

“The crowd was a huge factor. Silent night was really cool and effective,” Captain Jason Magid ’17 commented.  Silent night is a term used to describe a “crowd game”.  Everyone in the crowd dresses up in silly costumes, and remains silent until their team scores the tenth point.  After that point is scored, the crowd goes wild.

For the past three years, Peddie has had games that have come down to the final shot.  This year, it was very different. The large leads gave all players an opportunity to play and score. Peddie’s Most Valuable Player award went to Bruce Edwards ’17, and the Peddie School Invitational Tournament’s Most Valuable Player was awarded to Tyler Jones ’17.

Looking forward to the remainder of the winter season, the team is predicting high success.

“I think that our team has the potential of being really good; much better than last year’s team,” Jones ’17 said.

Some of the highlighted games and tournaments for Peddie are: The Hill Tournament, Westtown School, and Blair Academy.

“[Our] ultimate goal is to win the MAPL, as Peddie has not done so in the years that coach [Joe] Rulewich has been here,” Jones ’17 said. The seniors hope to honor Rulewich by achieving something that has never been done with him before. The last goal for the team this season is to get a Prep A State Championship.
