Dog Show Raises Awareness on How Trained Dogs Can Save Lives

Peddie welcomed Dr. Cindy Otto, a certified veterinarian and a professor of critical care at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, to discuss her work in the Pennsylvania Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 last Monday, Sept. 15.

Otto researches how dogs have the possibility of using their sense of smell to detect cancerous cells in the human body.

Experts say that Otto’s research could lead to more breakthroughs in screening for cancer.

Otto discussed her research with her Peddie audience through interactive remotes, and even brought a few of her training dogs for demonstrations. Students described the lecture as “amazing” and “eye-opening.”

“It’s incredible how much these dogs can help us in emergency situations,” Camila Perez ’15 said. “Dogs are capable of so much if given a chance, and ultimately, they have the power to save lives.”

“Before this talk, I hadn’t known different dogs were built for certain purposes,” Nitya Talreja ’17 said. “Dr. Otto is by far one of my favorite guest speakers I’ve heard at Peddie.”
