The junior class visited Philadelphia in the annual trip taken by students studying US History on Tuesday, Oct 7. While the class of 2015 missed out on several historic sites due to the government shutdown last year, the current juniors as well as the students visiting from Peddie’s sister school, EFZ, in Shanghai, China were able to explore many historic sites in Philadelphia.
For the Peddie juniors, the trip to Philadelphia provided a way to bring the history that they are learning in the classroom into the context of the real places in which those historical events occurred.
“It was a really cool experience going [to Philadelphia] and seeing all places that I’ve been hearing about in class,” Amy Qian ’16 said. “It gives me a better appreciation for all the history we’re learning.”
On the other hand, from the perspective of the EFZ students, the Philadelphia trip was a different kind of experience. While several of them felt that the trip was boring in comparison to their visit to New York, EFZ student Trista Mao had a different opinion.
“The sense of liberty and freedom left a deep impression on me,” Mao said. “When I saw the ‘We the People’ presentation in the Constitution Center, the only idea in my mind was that I wanted to immigrate to this country, or to have my kids live in this place. You are so lucky to be born in this country or live in it.”
