Twenty students took the Culture Bus—back from its year-long hiatus—on Oct. 18 to see the play The Understudy at The McCarter Theater in Princeton.
The Culture Bus is a vehicle that shuttles interested Peddie students to live performances in the local area. The opportunity to take the Culture Bus is open to all, and the cost of admission is subsidized by the theater department. Theater department head and coordinator of the Culture Bus, Elizabeth Sherman, believes strongly in exposing students to these off-campus acts.
“There is no replacement for seeing live theater,” Sherman said. “There is a vitality in the exchange between actor and audience that is undeniable, and in my opinion, deeply important. Kids that experience live theater are likely to have a more expansive world view, as it grows our empathy and understanding of human nature in a variety of ways.”
Robin Okunowo ’17, a first- timer on the Culture Bus, agreed with Sherman’s sentiments.
“I enjoyed going to see The Understudy,” Okunowo said. “The show was hilarious and we all enjoyed it so much.”
While Peddie students are often busy and cannot make time for these bonus events, Okunowo urges the community to relax for once and have a good time.
“ I would definitely recommend this to all student who enjoy a night on the town, or want to get away from school and work for a night and just enjoy themselves.”
The Peddie community will have more chances to enjoy creative arts in the area in the coming months.
