Student-Faculty Game Results in an Exciting Night

By Cole Abbey
Staff Writer

Students played against teachers in the annual student-faculty basketball game on Dec. 12.

It ended with a 70-60 victory by the faculty after some dominant game play and a number of interesting calls by the referees. It has been a tradition for three years.

A no homework night allowed for students to attend the game without any school related assignments to tend to. However, the decision to have a no homework night was not put in place as a result of the game, but rather by a scheduling decision made over a year ago.  Whatever the reason may be, the no homework night contributed to the large turnout of spectators, allowing those who would normally be focused on school to come together, taking part in the spirit of the student versus faculty basketball game.

The faculty team began the game with a 14-0 lead, which was highlighted by a three pointer basket by Director of College Counseling Jason Honsel. Afterwards, the student team began receiving a range of point values per basket made, including a ten pointer basket by John Fitzgerald ’16. There was also a great deal of controversy over a basket that resulted from an apparent injury to Dieken Torpey ’16. The injury was later found to be much less serious than expected, and some have speculated it was a fake injury.

Regardless of the outcome, mostly everyone agreed it was an exciting and fun night.

“It’s hard to see your boys put in so much work only to have the other team come out on top,”  Student Team Coach Erik Stefanowicz ’15 said. “However, being a part of the game was an absolute blast. There really was an awesome energy surrounding the game.”

“I didn’t care about winning or losing, I just wanted to have a good time, and I did.” Carlos Beason ’15 said.

According to Associate Director of Admission Michael Agosto, the MVPs of the night were Jesse Flaherty ’14 and Brian Rivers ’14.

“[Flaherty] was the engine that moved the student team and [Rivers] was as impressive as a referee as he was as a player in the PSIT,” Agosto said.

“[Associate Head of School Catherine Rodrigue exhibited] fancy footwork and prodigious skills,” Honsel said.

There was even some good-natured ribbing between players.

“I didn’t really enjoy playing with Mr. Roach,” English Teacher Kurt Bennet said of English Teacher Matthew Roach. “He doesn’t pass the ball, and he took a number of selfish shots. It’s like, ‘Hey Mr. Roach, here’s a hypothetical: Your teammates are open.’”
