Peddie Crew Rows to Success
May 22, 2015
Peddie Crew brought on their competitive spirit as they raced in the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia. The races, held on the weekend of May 16, welcomed over 180 schools from both Canada and the U.S.
All the boats qualified for semifinals, and the girls’ junior boat moved up to finals, winning third place. Coxswain Hannah Campbell ’17 led the rowers, Angela Glazer ’16, Britni Strobeck ’17, Charlotte Quinn ’18, and Eliza Wagner ’16 through the 1500 meter race, making it on the podium for the first time since 2007.
“We all knew that we had to totally commit to each other to pull off the race and beat the odds. That’s exactly what we did. Our coxswain, Hannah Campbell, told us before we started the race that we should give everything we had and leave it on the water, and we should have no regrets by the time we finished,” said Quinn.
“The regatta was really fun. My favorite part was really bonding with my boat. I was so proud of everyone when we finished third. We beat the odds like I knew we would,” said Campbell.
The girls’ senior boat, consisting of coxswain Alex Baum ’15, and rowers Katie Benham ’16, Michaela Nieuwenhuizen ’15, Jordan Kelley ’16, and Mia Caglieris ’15 also finished their race strong, and placed 10th out of 58 boats.
“Since it’s only a 1500 meter race course, Stotes is a faster version of every other race. You get 2 minutes to start, 2 minutes to settle, and 2 minutes to sprint. There’s absolutely no room for hesitation or someone’s going to take that split second away from you. Getting the chance to take the split seconds from other teams in front of hundreds of fans is exhilarating,” said Benham.
The boys’ senior boat also prevailed, placing fifth in the finals with coxswain Ryan Davison ’16, and rowers Ethan Rosen ’15, Oliver Probst ’15, Ross Hamilton ’16, and Pieter de Buck ’15.
The boys’ junior boat, consisting of coxswain Jenny Lee ’16, and rowers Michael Yu ’16, Oliver Crane ’17, Ben Carroll ’16, and Julius Sim ’16 were unable to make it to finals, but placed fifth in semifinals out of 73 boats.
“I was just really happy all the boats made it to semifinals and it was a really good day for Peddie Crew in general! It was a really good way to end the season,” said Jenny Lee ’16.
