March is Women’s History Month! First appearing in the 1980s as Women’s History Week, Women’s History Month — designated in 1987 — focuses on women’s history and celebrates the contribution of women to historical and modern society. Peddie and the DEI Office take the initiative to recognize the role of women both during and outside of Women’s History Month, the most prominent example of this being the Peddie Women’s Network.
The Peddie Women’s Network, called We Soar, was founded in 2022, and, according to their web page, “this affinity network is offered for those who identify as women or feminine-of-center (cisgender, transgender and/or non-binary).”. Led by three co-chairs, Pia Aklian ’00, Alison Dorsey ’00 and Johára Tucker ’00, and advisory chairs Em Izzo ’15 and Chavon Sutton ’99, the network aims to provide all Peddie women with a supportive network in many different facets. This includes staying in contact and forming meaningful connections with each other, as well as supporting each other in wide pursuits and endeavors.
One of We Soar’s most important pursuits is its LinkedIn group, which is the portal through which much of the network operates. Through their LinkedIn, Peddie women can reach and connect with other Peddie women around the world and share job opportunities, career stories and other methods of support.
The network also hosts events and get-togethers, like the Family Style Dinner on March 25 in honor of Women’s History Month. The women of Peddie, who are anyone eligible to join the network, shared a family-style dinner with students. This provided an amazing opportunity for both students and other Peddie women alike, to get to know each other and start building connections with different groups of people. We Soar will also have a tent at Reunion 2024, May 31-June 1.
