On Sunday, October 20, the Peddie Science Center was transformed: Traditional Indian garlands decorated the halls, Bollywood music blasted from speakers, and a large Indian feast was set up. Peddie’s annual Diwali celebration has once again brought the community together in celebration.
Diwali, on October 31 this year, celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Diwali is observed across faiths in South Asia, including Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. Many traditions are associated with the holiday, including performing Poojas (prayers), lighting Diyas (clay lamps that are lit around the house), and making Rangoli (designs made of colored rice to decorate the front of the home).
After a delicious dinner from the Palace of Asia, Peddie students danced to classics, including Desi Girl, Lungi Dance, and Sheila Ki Jawa. Rishi Seth ’25, a Desi Club Leader, said, “I had an amazing time sharing Indian cuisine with my friends, and it was great seeing the entire community show up to celebrate Diwali.” The evening ended with lighting sparklers, a classic Diwali tradition.
Peddie’s Diwali has brought joy and celebration to campus for the over 150 students and community members who attended, allowing students to celebrate the holiday and to learn about Indian culture. Aanya Tolat ’25, a Desi Club Leader, said, “It’s amazing to see the entire school come together to celebrate the event — students and teachers all bring their families, and everyone dances around in the Science Center. It’s one of my favorite Peddie traditions.”
