Being on the discipline committee often requires that you put the needs of the school ahead of your personal feelings and friendships. In light of this, why should your peers choose you to represent them on a committee which makes decisions that have a profound impact on individuals and the school community as a whole? What qualities do you possess that make you a good candidate for this position?
My main reason for signing up for a role like this is to give a voice to struggling students who feel their voices aren’t being heard. Part of my reasoning for doing this is that I was a struggling student. That student who was always racking up lates, that student who didn’t seem to have their work together, that student who was facing punishment after punishment because I was afraid to tell others what I was going through. I felt like I didn’t have a voice to advocate for myself. Fortunately, through luck and hard work, I dug myself out of the pit created by myself and my circumstances, started to improve, and finally, got the hang of navigating Peddie. However, I still had that lingering thought: would things have been different if I had someone there to help me when things were rough? So, in order to attempt to fulfill the role of someone I needed all those years ago, I will be running for the Discipline Committee. Over this past year, I have been trying to become a more outgoing person and someone that other people can rely on for advice and while I still might not have that outgoing part down, what I can attest to is that I have reached out and help others, even those who I might not know and have attempted to improve their mood even by the slightest bit. I always try my best to give the best advice for the scenarios they are facing, and I always try to come at it from a logical, but also sympathetic perspective to make sure that person can put their best foot forward. I feel like these skills make me a great option to pick if you need someone to advocate for you, even in the toughest of scenarios. I feel like it is these qualities that truly make me think that I would be a great candidate for you to have in mind in this upcoming election.
How might your academic and extracurricular obligations next year impact your role as a member of the Disciplinary Committee?
Regarding academic obligations, I always love to get my work done ahead of time so I know that I will be available most of the time whenever my fellow students need me. Additionally, being in the theater department has allowed me to meet a massive variety of people I might have never gotten the chance to know under any other circumstances, and that means that I got to know a ton of them on a personal level. This communication was something that I had never experienced before, and the most important thing it has taught me is that context is everything for a scenario. What might have hurt one person’s feelings, or one mistake someone has made , could have been minuscule in their eyes. Had it been brought to their attention early, there might have been time to de-escalate a scenario and reach a peaceful resolution. I hope to bring this context in with me as a point of advocacy in the Discipline Committee to make my fellow students feel heard.
