The British Royal Family has been a consistent focus of the media, the world and even the Peddie community. On November 27th, 2017, the royal engagement of HRH Prince Harry of Wales to Meghan Markle, an American actor and humanitarian campaigner, was announced to the public.

“I was extremely excited when I heard about the engagement! Meghan Markle serves as a great role model to young women,” said Uma Mani ’20. In particular, Mani believes that it is great that there is going to be a member of the British Royal Family that is of mixed race.

Despite generally positive responses from the public, many consider the engagement of Harry and Markle to be very controversial. Markle is highly renowned for her role in Suits, an American drama series. She is a divorced, mixed race woman, having an African-American mother and a Caucasian father. Many years ago, this engagement would not have been possible.

“The engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shows how special this time period we live in is. The British are known for being very homogeneous in regards to race [in the Royal Family]. The engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan show how much society has changed and how it is evolving” said Jessica Cheng ‘20.

Although the engagement has sparked controversy amongst viewers of the media, the majority of the public are delighted for the couple. An official wedding date has yet to be released, but one should anticipate the wedding to occur in May of 2018, and it is a certainty that Peddie, and the world, will be watching.
