When thinking about a typical high school sport, one would probably imagine a green meadow with soccer balls or a nice gym with basketball hoops. But compared to a goal that penetrates through a massive goalie or a three-point shot in a tight game, a runner crossing the end banner after a good 5K race may not be as much of a popular image that comes to our mind. Why so?
Cross country, although it is a sport that requires unimaginable concentration and determination, usually remains underrated by many sports fans due to the fact that it is a battle with oneself rather than opponents. However, cross country is definitely a worthwhile sport.
Ms. Morgan, coach of the cross country team, says that coaching the team brings her immense joy, especially as she works with her JV group. “Stepping out of the classroom to coach athletes and witness their growth throughout the season is incredibly rewarding,” She said, “The JV group includes runners of all skill levels, yet they consistently support one another in their individual journeys to improve. This creates an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and can learn from one another … Being part of this sport is truly a privilege.”
When asked what his favorite memory of being a member of cross country was, Tony Kim’ 28 said it was running in the rain during one of the practices. “Before that, I felt drowsy and didn’t want to participate. However, that experience impacted me so much that I could always stay enthusiastic in cross country, which also led to better records.” He continued, “Cross country helps me stay healthy and strengthens me so that I don’t get tired easily when I study.”
Cross country offers different memories and gains to different people. For Hajarah Haruna’ 28, cross country was a connection to her potential as well as her own self. “Cross country is a sport that challenges me to go beyond what I think I can accomplish,” Hajarah said. “My favorite memory of cross country was when I finished the 3 miles on the trail and heard everyone encourage me to push through. The amount of encouragement everyone on the team gives each other in cross country was something that definitely made me enjoy the sport more.”
Overall, cross country is definitely a worthwhile sport that brings benefits that do not simply end with good stamina and health. Cross country offers any member with unmeasurable experiences, opportunities for growth, and true friends. So next time you try to decide what to do for your fall sport, why not consider cross country?
