With only one match (Blair!) remaining in the season, including MAPLs, the Peddie Girls’ Varsity Tennis team is undefeated with an impressive record of 20-0 as of October 30, 2024. This season marks a historic achievement for PGVT, earning the most wins in over two decades. The team has consistently demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, putting in great effort regardless of their opponent.
Coach Dubrule said: “The team’s biggest strength is that everyone is really good this year. There are no weak spots. We walk into a match knowing where we’ll win. Our first two singles are nearly unbeatable and take a lot of pressure off the other girls.”
A standout among the amazing team is Victoria Vahi ’26. Despite being new to the team, she leads with a record of 25-3 (wins-losses). This puts her on the leaderboard for the “Most Wins in a Single Season Since 2004.” With a very successful year, all other members of the starting lineup find themselves on the leaderboard, too!
In addition to their incredible skill, the team shares a strong, close-knit bond. Coach Dubrule remarked: “The girls love being around each other, on the court, off the court, in the gym, on the bus, and stopping for food. They have lots of fun in everything they do. Going to battle with your friends on the courts beside you can make you play harder, as you don’t want to let down your teammates.” The strong connections among team members boost both their on-court chemistry and confidence. Even when some players aren’t playing, you’ll find them right next to the court, cheering on their teammates.
Team Captain Ivy Zhao ’25 stated, “Tennis feels like a team sport since we all are so tight and supportive of one another! I love it when my teammates cheer me on as it brightens my mood and boosts my confidence.”
When asked what she appreciates and loves about being part of the tennis team, first singles Brielle Quaye ’26 remarked, “I love being on the tennis team because of the lifelong friendships I have made by being on the team!”
The team has faced numerous challenges this season, such as injuries and tight matches. Yet, the girls consistently played their best tennis, displaying their resilience throughout the entire match. After placing below Lawrenceville at States [4th], the team had to face them again the very next day. Though they initially lost the doubles point against their toughest opponent, Lawrenceville, they managed to pull through and secure a 5-2 victory, with Saanvi Gudapati ’26, Sophie Liz Wang ’27 and Ivy Zhao ’25 all reaching a third-set tiebreaker. Saanvi Gudapati ’26 especially illustrated determination during her match against Lawrenceville. Although she lost the first set 0-6, she kept her head up, stayed determined and came back to win the next two sets 7-6 (2) and 10-8 in the set tiebreaker.
