On Sunday, April 13, Peddie hosted the Special Olympics New Jersey Central Swimming Regional for the 25th year in a row. Teams from all over New Jersey gathered for this community-building event that celebrates the achievements of young swimmers with intellectual disabilities and fosters a sense of connection – not only among the swimmers but also among the volunteers.
The swimmers swam in a wide range of events, from the 400-meter freestyle to the 25-meter breaststroke. This meet is not about times or medals; it celebrates the swimmers themselves. Kevin Hu ’27, a student volunteer at the meet, shared, “I believe these events not only give us an opportunity to help others, they give
athletes an opportunity to try and achieve their goals.”
One swimmer, who has attended this meet for the past 19 years, said that they never get tired of coming back. Peddie is a school that fosters community and teamwork. This meet ensures the swimmers feel welcome and safe, supported by student volunteers who, in turn, gain valuable life lessons and skills. In the end, the shared smiles and passionate cheers are what remind everyone why this tradition is such a big deal year after year.
