Candidate Statement:
Throughout the past three years at Peddie, I have been lucky enough to be a small part of every one of your lives in some way. Whether it be planning class trips or scooping frozen ice cream until my wrists cramped during exam breaks, I hope that I have been able to make everyone’s experience at Peddie a little better. My goal as a representative is always to create opportunities that will leave a mark on your memories at Peddie. Between organizing trips or decorating for homecoming, I am honored to have been a part of your Peddie experience so far. I have loved learning the importance of leadership and organizing activities that will make you remember your best moments at Peddie in twenty years. Because Peddie is such a small community, change leaves a huge impact. I hope that I can facilitate this impact and would be honored to do so.
Thank you for your time, and I hope you will consider me for your vote!
Governing student council and the school will take a good portion of your time, what other activities both in and out of school do you plan on participating in? How will you balance them?
I have been very lucky to serve on student council throughout the entirety of my high school career. I have grown comfortable with mitigating the increasing balance between school work, individual class leadership, and other obligations outside of the classroom. It takes a lot of preparation and management to work around meetings or decorating for school dances. My experience on student council has taught me the value of balance and planning ahead that allows me to be an active member in stucco. Outside of student council and the classroom I nurture my love for writing as an editor on the Peddie Newspaper and Tuesday nights as a fellow for the writing center. I am an active member in the broader Peddie community as a regular Falcon cheer squad member, panelist, and a variety of other admission events. Although I can’t further my JV basketball career next year, I plan to stay involved through managing the team and being present for as many games as I can. I know I will continue to stay engaged outside of student council because I genuinely love giving back to the community in any way I can, not because I feel obligated to. I believe that balance is very achievable in the hindsight of things because my desire to serve Peddie outweighs any challenges that come with managing multiple commitments.
What qualities do you possess that makes you a good role model and representative that will allow you to be a leader of the entire school?
Since a leader sets the tone for the entire community, I think it is so important to lead with spirit and empathy. Whether that looks like being at the front of the sideline on Blair day, making sure people are heard, or devoting my time to any issue that comes up. I believe my approachability and enthusiasm for Peddie allows me to lead with service rather than authority.
What ideas do you have for change and how would you implement these ideas? What would you like to continue?
As previously mentioned, a very important area of interest to me is fostering greater school spirit. Between coursework and non-academic activities it is very easy to feel like there is not enough time in the day to attend student life activities. Between class trips, sporting events, and even spirit weeks, I have seen the school spirit waver each year. Part of this issue could be that people aren’t aware when these activities occur. Between the number of emails we get as students or missing a Peddie Flock post on your Instagram feed, it is very easy to miss notice of a basketball game or a team on campus you do not normally interact with. However, the one platform all students actually use on a daily basis is Canvas. I hope to implement notices of these events on your Canvas feed that will inform the student body of major events whether it be sport games, the musical, or all school club activities. In addition, I understand it can be hard to make it to these games without feeling the pressure of school work weighing on your shoulders. As a way to mitigate that and encourage higher attendance, I propose we cooperate with administration to facilitate more no homework nights, like the music concert, on days of important events (senior night, PSIT, musical theater, etc.) in order to incentivize more peer support at your activities! Even if participation is seen collectively in smaller projects like dress down class Saturdays, I will be happy to encourage and throw my support behind activities that unify the student body and boost spirit.
