In a debut announcement to the community on Monday, December 1, the Peddie Bike Shop released details about its first consultation/repair event. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 6, at 12:30 P.M. outside the Science Center.
The news was shared in an email from English teacher Mr. La Bella, who explained that the Peddie Bike Shop is a service where students and faculty can bring their bike in to have it repaired and adjusted or even to learn some new skills on how to fix it themselves.
According to Mr. La Bella, the Peddie Bike Shop formed out of the Bicycle Reclamation Project that Dr. Peretz, Ms. McKnight, and Alex MacMillan ’26 worked on last year. Out of this project, they were able to repair seven to eight abandoned or donated bikes so that they could become useful for whomever their next owners would be.
Following this, Mr. La Bella’s daughter Tilda observed that students on campus do not have easy access to getting their bikes repaired. He described how this “got me thinking about ways the school could support bike riders and develop self-sufficiency in bike maintenance, particularly for (but not exclusive to) students.” Thus, the Peddie Bike Shop seemed like the perfect thing to start on campus as a way to promote safe and environmentally-friendly bicycle use at Peddie.
Besides Mr. Labella, Alex MacMillan ’26 is also a part of the Peddie Bike Shop as the student technician, repairing a majority of the bikes from last year.
To schedule a bike repair, one simply needs to fill out a Google Form indicating their name, a description of their bike, and if they are interested in learning about bicycle maintenance skills. (Note: The form for this week’s event closed on Thursday.)
