Why do you really want to serve in this position?
I have a crippling need to feed my oversized ego.
…But that’s maybe only 1% of my actual reason. Hi, I’m Sewon! During my first term here at Peddie, I’ve gotten to participate in so many incredible opportunities with the support of a vibrant community. I think as the Class of 29, we represent the heart of this unique school experience: excitement, trying new things, and forming close-knit bonds. After receiving so many blessings, I don’t want to be a simply passive member in this community. I want to help curate a better environment for all of us, helping your opinions shape the future we want for our next few years at Peddie. The only way I can be here for everyone, truly listen to every voice, and magnify our wishes is to be your class representative.
Why should your peers choose you to represent them on the Student Council and in the Peddie community? What qualities do you possess that will allow you to be a successful representative? What ideas do you want to bring to Student Council?
I may not be the most extroverted or intelligent person, but I promise to bring reliability to the Student Council. This community helped me realize my own challenges are not an excuse to stay complacent and to always rise to the occasion. I want to repay this support with full service. By being a firm friend and listener to every person in this wonderful class, I will rise to our visions for the future. I will not be a demanding leader, but a microphone for your voice. I also led my previous school’s student council in 6th and 8th grade as Vice President. This means I already have plenty of experience with making real change and organizing fun events!
How will you ensure that your leadership is inclusive and representative of the entire student body?
I think what’s more important than forms or class-wide emails is simply being open to talk. Although I plan to occasionally send out optional surveys to collect ideas, I will always be available to discuss, plan, and turn your dreams into a reality. Each of us deserve the chance to be heard. I can be reached through any and all forms of communication!
What initiatives do you have in mind to improve the overall school experience for your fellow students?
More communication! We need clearer communication about school events, opportunities, and most importantly, between our fellow classmates. Being able to interact freely through fun meetings with food, activities, games, and other activities is absolutely essential. I think we would also benefit greatly from more organized ways to receive information about the school.
How might your academic and extracurricular obligations next year impact your role as a member of Student Council?
I plan to keep taking rigorous courses next year, and they will no doubt continue to deflate my ego significantly (as math is doing to me this year…). However, because of my challenging schedule, I’ve gained valuable skills in efficient time management and communication. My academics are no excuse to put off my responsibilities, and I will always prioritize representing our class. Thank you for taking the time to read my statement!
